Parades

Many years ago, when I was a little girl, we drove to Washington to visit my aunt and uncle.  While we were hanging out, doing whatever you do in a small town when you’re young, a wonderful thing happened: the circus came to town.  (Not my family, the REAL circus).  They had a parade through the streets of little Goldendale, and wonder of wonders, they had elephants!  I had never, ever, in all my 6 or 7 years, seen anything as wondrous as those enormous creatures.  I remember to this day the joy I felt watching them lumber past us.  There was just one missing piece in that perfect moment.  My dad wasn’t there.  He was back at the house and strolled up to join us after the elephants and company were long out of sight.  He missed the entire parade.  (It was probably five whole minutes!)  I was devastated for him.  When he joined our little group standing by the side of the road, I did my best to recreate the wonder but my verbal skills were no match for the images dancing in my mind.

Have you ever felt like that?  You’ve seen something wonderful, heard something memorable, witnessed something incredible.  And you want to pass the joy along, but….it’s just not the same.  That’s how I’m feeling right now, sitting here trying to share The Cause with you.  I have witnessed, over the last eight years and particularly the last twelve months, an amazing parade, not of elephants and acrobats, but of amazing, radical, mind-blowing….people.  I can’t begin to describe the sight of these world-changers, marching through the streets of the world.  It would take your breath away to see them.  My verbal skills, albeit better than when I was 6, are still not sufficient to do them justice.

The Cause has partners on 4 continents.  Between them, they touched thousands of lives this past year.  And you know what?  We had a part in that.  While we are not missionaries, our involvement with those who are impacts the lives of thousands around the world.  And while you may never travel to the islands of Lake Victoria, or walk the streets of a little Mayan village, your support of The Cause empowers others to do so.  Together we are changing the world.

A Good Choice...

I’ve traveled a bit, trying to make a difference.  I’ve been to Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela, Uganda, Kenya.  I’ve witnessed poverty and hopelessness, stared in the face of AIDS.  I’ve seen firsthand the effects of ignorance and wrong thinking and greed.

You get the picture.

If you’re like me, you’ve had moments when you were determined to change the way things are in our world.  But those moments fade; it’s just too much.  Too hard.  Too hopeless.

But a funny thing happened on the way to giving up.  I met some people.  People who are doing everything within their power to keep the channels of hope flowing in the driest, neediest places on earth.  And they are changing the course of the river, shovel by shovel.    Many of them have been toiling alone or nearly so.  All of them face more need than they can possibly meet.  Now we’re going to help – they’ve opened the window and let us glimpse the now of their lives, and drawn for us the future that could be, should be, and will be.

Curious?  I hope so.

What you would give to know you’re making a difference?

Wouldn’t you like to lay your head on the pillow each night, knowing you’ve helped a child have a bed to sleep in?  What if every time you picked up a book to read, you knew that you were helping bring the magic of reading to children living in an orphanage on an island in Africa?  What if you knew that the medicine you take for granted was going to be available to the world’s poorest populations, thanks to you?

I think that you’d be thrilled to know you played a part in those scenarios.  I think you might have chills thinking about it.  Because I know you.  And that’s my point.

I know you, and you know someone else.  And they know a bunch of other people.  And chances are, most of those people we like to call friends are good people.  They really do care.  Mostly, we just don’t know what to do with our compassion.

Here’s your chance.

Take it.

Join 345.

That’s it.

Pledge $3.45 a month.  Simple.  Low-impact.  Life-changing.  Guaranteed.

Because with your partnership, and the partnership of all those other people you know, and the ones I know, we are going to change the world, and the way that people look at getting involved.

I don’t know about you, but I want to be a part of something BIG.  I mean really BIG.  Something that is worth talking about to my friends.  Something that makes me happy to think about and excited to be a part of.  That is 345.

Starting now, we are going to build schools for orphans.  We’re going to buy food and clothing and necessities.  We’re going to build fresh-water springs and medical clinics.  We’re going to provide medicine and medical care for handicapped children in China, and provide a home for street boys in Honduras.  We’re going to help orphan girls go to college, young men and women start their own businesses.  And we’re going to provide the most precious commodity of all – hope.

Who’s going to do that, you ask?  You are.  We are.  For real.

This time, it’s not good enough to sit back and shake our heads and wish for things to be better.  This time, we’re going to make it better.  Together.  One child at a time.  One dollar at a time.  One prayer at a time.

It’s going to work.

It’s a good choice.

Make some change.  $3.45.
