Good choice...

August 1, 2009

I’ve traveled a bit, trying to make a difference.  I’ve been to Haiti, Mexico, Venezuela, Uganda, Kenya.  I’ve witnessed poverty and hopelessness, stared in the face of AIDS.  I’ve seen firsthand the effects of ignorance and wrong thinking and greed.

You get the picture.

If you’re like me, you’ve had moments when you were determined to change the way things are in our world.  But those moments fade; it’s just too much.  Too hard.  Too hopeless.

But a funny thing happened on the way to giving up.  I met some people.  People who are changing the course of the river, shovel by shovel.  They are doing everything within their power to keep the channels of hope flowing in the driest, neediest places on earth.  Many of them have been toiling alone or nearly so.  All of them face more need than they can possibly meet.  Now we’re going to help – they’ve opened the window and let us glimpse the now of their lives, and drawn for us the future that could be, should be, and will be.

Curious?  I hope so.

What you would give to know you’re making a difference?

Wouldn’t you like to lay your head on the pillow each night, knowing you’ve helped a child have a bed to sleep in?  What if every time you picked up a book to read, you knew that you were helping bring the magic of reading to children living in an orphanage on an island in Africa?  What if you knew that the medicine you take for granted was going to be available to the world’s poorest populations, thanks to you?

I think that you’d be thrilled to know you played a part in those scenarios.  I think you might have chills thinking about it.  Because I know you.  And that’s my point.

I know you, and you know someone else.  And they know a bunch of other people.  And chances are, most of those people we like to call friends are good people.  They really do care.  Mostly, we just don’t know what to do with our compassion.

Here’s your chance.

Take it.

Join 345.

That’s it.

Pledge $3.45 a month.  Simple.  Low-impact.  Life-changing.  Guaranteed.

Because with your partnership, and the partnership of all those other people you know, and the ones I know, we are going to change the world, and the way that people look at getting involved.

I don’t know about you, but I want to be a part of something BIG.  I mean really BIG.  Something that is worth talking about to my friends.  Something that makes me happy to think about and excited to be a part of.  That is 345.

Starting now, we are going to build schools for orphans.  We’re going to buy food and clothing and necessities.  We’re going to build fresh-water springs and medical clinics.  We’re going to provide medicine and medical care for handicapped children in China, and provide a home for street boys in Honduras.  We’re going to help orphan girls go to college, young men and women start their own businesses.  And we’re going to provide the most precious commodity of all – hope.

Who’s going to do that, you ask?  You are.  We are.  For real.

This time, it’s not good enough to sit back and shake our heads and wish for things to be better.  This time, we’re going to make it better.  Together.  One child at a time.  One dollar at a time.  One prayer at a time.

It’s going to work.

It’s a good choice.

Make some change.  $3.45.
